The following are just some of the many volunteer opportunities and scholarships that are available for Christian medical students at various stages of their medical school careers.
Rush Community Service Initiatives Program (RCSIP)
The first place to turn to for volunteering at Rush. It currently offers five clinical programs, nine non-clinical programs, and one interdisciplinary student program. Some of the clinics involved are Christian!
Tutor children after school at a Christian youth academy! E-mail the school and arrange a time to meet. The school is only about a mile from campus.
Prepare meals and minister to women at a domestic shelter. Run by a partnership between the Cityview Presbyterian Church and Breakthrough Urban Ministries.
Lawndale Christian Health Center
A favorite among Rush medical students for rotations and internships. Each year, we have Lawndale speakers come to share their stories.
First Year Summer Opportunities
Lawndale Summer Medical Project
A great summer volunteer opportunity for M1s to experience Lawndale’s mission for themselves. The 4-week service project runs from June 27th to July 28th. Project tuition is $700.00. Deadline is March 15th.
Whole Person Care Preceptorship
Spend the summer after your first year in southern California, shadowing and working with Christian doctors in the US and Mexico as you learn to meet both the physical and spiritual needs of patients. Preceptorship runs from June 16th to July 17th.
Third and Fourth Year Opportunities
MAP International Medical Fellowship
Third and fourth year students apply for grants to work with medical missionaries abroad for at least eight weeks.
Southwestern Medical Clinic Fellowship
Third and fourth year students apply for a fellowship to work at a Christian health clinic in Michigan.
James S. Westra Memorial Endowment Fund
Another scholarship for third and fourth year medical students for overseas missionary trips abroad.
Africa Inland Mission International
There are opportunities for fourth year students to do rotations in Kenya at Christian health clinics, such as the Tenwek Hospital. One of our contacts is missionary Dr. Steve Lee, a UIC graduate, a pioneer in the field.
So you want to go out on an adventure and serve the poor as a missionary doctor in a faraway Third World country, but can’t because of your student loans? Project MedSend will help cover those loans while you are abroad.
