Teaching style

It is mostly 1 on 1 with attendings teaching as you go.  You have your own patients and make your own decisions.

Suggested reading/pocket contents

No reading sources needed.  Texts available in ER conference room.

Structure of rotation

One-on-one with attendings/residents

Amt/quality of time residents/attendings

You work with different attendings daily.  80% of your time is spent with either attendings or residents if you are not with a patient or at lunch.  You will learn a lot and get to do procedures.  I did suturing, read imaging, ordered and performed tests, and approximated dislocations.  It is a good prep for being an intern.

Proportion of time evaluating pts alone

Procedures

A few times/day

Typical day

10 hr shift, so always 3 days off a week. Get to ER, log in to the computer, and just see patients as they come in.  If you are slow you will see less, and if you are efficient you will see more. I usually went in at about 10 or 11am.  See your patient, write a note in the system, order tests, tell nurses what you want them to do, present to attendings.  You get as much autonomy as you deserve but they'll hold your hand if you are lost.
