Bridging the Gap - PharmFree joins Access to Essential Medicines

Description: UIC College of Medicine and UIC College of Pharmacy will host a FREE day-long workshop on understanding the intricate relationship between the campaign for PharmFree medical education and the global campaign for access to essential medicines. This intimate Saturday workshop will heavily emphasize actual case studies. Confirmed keynote speeches will cover specific areas such as:
1) How students made "statins" globally accessible (co-sponsored by Universities Allied for Essential Medicines, Sandeep Kishore MD/PHD student from Cornell)
2) Intellectual Property, TRIPS, and Novartis' legal challenge to India (Brook Baker, Board member, HealthGAP and professor at Northeastern Law)
3) Thailand, Abbott, and Compulsory Licensing: Actvism and Access to Essential Meds (Tanya Wansom, AMSA Global Health Committee Chair)
4) The evolution of UIC College of Medicine and UIH's conflict-of-interest policies
5) PharmFree 101 - Learn more about AMSA's PharmFree campaign to reclaim the ethics and professionalism of medicine.
6) Pharm Rep Tactics and Counter-Detailing (led by former pharm reps)
7) Network with local students from UIC, Rush, Northwestern, Loyola, U Chicago, Oregon, Texas, and much more!
At the end of the workshop, attendees will draft/brainstorm points to be included into a draft resolution on PharmFree medical education Access to Essential Medicines. Students will be encouraged to bring this resolution and these campaigns back to their Academic Medical Centers through leadership, advocacy, and seminars / lectures.
